I’d much rather be a working class man on a bicycle then a yup in a fancy car. That sort of thing.

Nora and One Left

We got a lovely e-mail today from a band called Nora and One Left. Next to music, they are in love with all things cycle chic. Which is pretty perfect, cause next to cycle chic, we are in love with all things music.
And though their music is the best possible soundtrack for a bicycle ride in any given season of the year, their christmas tune put a big smile on our face. Listen to it – over and over again – here:

Wonder

They say the best way to really notice your environment – a city, the landscape… – is by riding a bicycle through it. Some also say the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
So… here is a film by Foam, the brilliant photography museum in Amsterdam, about the brilliant photographer Jessica Backhaus. Famous for her special and wonderful way of looking at things, she can be seen riding her bicycle and keeping her eyes wide open to the small wonders that surround her.

We got a message from W-Evilghem Fixed about this music video from Janne Vanneste, a Belgian singer-songwriter.
Janne grew up in a musical family. She is the younger sister of Brent Vanneste, who is member of the band Steak Number Eight. Six years ago Janne taught herself to play the piano. Now the instrument has become an extension of her. It helps her to express her feelings as she sings. The video of her song “This is how we live” is simply beautiful as we see Janne, riding along a river (the Lys?) on her bicycle. Sit back, listen and enjoy.

Get inspired, part I

Onze mailbox blijft verrassen. Dit verhaal van Chris uit Gent vonden we er deze morgen in:
‘Al jaren sukkel ik met mijn gezondheid en op den duur was ik in een rolstoel beland. Door aangepaste medicijnen kon ik opnieuw wat stappen, middels 2 krukken, doch het werd terug steeds moeizamer. De laatste tijd kon ik vrijwel mijn huisje niet meer uit te komen en voelde me opgesloten. Tot op een dag dat ik met veel moeite naar mijn dokter geraakte, was ik in het terugkeren mijn bus kwijt en moest wachten. Ik stond bij een handelaar die fietsen verkocht en was even binnengestapt.
Hij had mooie fietsen in aanbieding en het interesseerde me wel, doch ik wist niet of ik het zou kunnen. Na het eerst even te hebben geprobeerd, leek het zelfs vrij goed te gaan en ik had me direct één aangekocht. Ondanks de pijn reed ik vlot en was zeer gelukkig omdat ik opnieuw van tussen de 4 muren weg was en zo mijn vrijheid wat terug heb gewonnen.
Stappen lukt bijna niet meer, maar fietsen gaat goed. Ik had al een tijdje voor ik deze fiets had gekocht, pijnlijke hartproblemen, maar deze zijn nu fel verminderd. Op een goede 14 dagen ben ik zelfs 10 kilo vermagerd en dat was nodig. Ik had vrijwel niets meer van beweging.
Helaas kan ik niet alle dagen op de fiets, soms is de pijn te erg, maar ik probeer het zo vaak mogelijk, en met een extra pilletje moet het gaan. Ik voel me fysiek en mentaal beter door die fiets en ben er zo apetrots van, dat ik daar een filmpje heb over gemaakt, met foto’s van mijn aluminium paard 
’
Dit geeft een heel nieuwe betekenis aan het idee ‘Mijn fiets, mijn vrijheid’. Een diepmenselijke. Wees geïnspireerd, jongens en meisjes.
