Sketches with bikes

That is the title of the e-mail my new Roumanian friend Stefan Zaharia sent me. I met Stefan in Lisbon, Portugal, two weeks ago. He’s a really good guy and married to a long time friend of mine. Both of them are architects, which means they can draw a little – and that’s an understatement.

When I was in Lisbon, I think I spotted about three people on bikes. Most people there don’t ride in the city, because of the steep hills. If you want to see bicycles, you need to go to the boardwalk next to the river.

So it was a bit of a surprise to see these little bicycle sketches hanging on the walls in their apartment. I asked Stefan about it and here is his story. ‘I had a bike in Roumania. It was a gift from my uncle, a bike from 1959, a German bike ‘Move’ (Seagull). It is a women bike but it was the best bike I had. It was really flying and I’ve crossed my country with it.’

I love this little story, like I love these little sketches.
