London

London, probably my favourite city in the world, has been making some good efforts to become a more bicycle orientated city. The city aims to increase cycling in London by 400 per cent by 2025.

Reader and former London resident Nathalie Vanderiet sent us link to the launch of the Barclays Cycle Superhighways. These superhighways should – and we quote – provide ‘cyclists with safer and more direct routes into the city’. These bicycle highways remind me of the time I went to Montreal, Canada, where they have the same thing going on. I really enjoyed riding them.

As you can see in this photo the highways pass some crowded and narrow streets, which leaves the safety aspect a bit debatable. Blue paint or not, cars will ride over it if they think they should, as you can practically see demosntrated in the above right corner.

And in other London news, there is a new bike share programme. And The Guardian gave it a test spin.

People For Bikes: Why Do You Ride?

Riding a bike in the USA or in Australia is a whole different ballgame than overhere in Belgium, or Europe. More than anywhere else, cycling has been claimed by the sports industry in the US. If you go ride a bike, you want to be like Lance Armstrong. That simple. You ride for anything else, say to go to work, you get frowned upon. You’re an alien.

Is it like that everywhere? Course not. See Portland for example, take a look at David Byrne in New York City and go visit the brilliant Bike by the Sea blog by Christa in Santa Barbara. And they are not alone. But in general, the leading use of a bicyle is for sports and outdoor action.

Seeing that bicycles in a major parts of the US still have a long way to go to get in the mainstream, it must be said that the People for Bikes are running a campaign definitely worth mentioning. It leaves you with a good feeling, and that really is all it takes.

Especially this video, this Poem to Biking, is a beautiful and very positive one. A wonderful effort. Okay, there are a lot of helmets in this video which might focus the attention to cycling as being dangerous too much (or is that just us?), and the spandex part shows old habits. But they solve that quite cleverly with the spiderman link.

Sigur Ros & Brompton

Here’s a silly little gem I found on youtube: Sigur Ros having a bit of typical tour fun with some Brompton folding bikes in Montreal, Canada.

Gotta love Sigur Ros. Yep.

‘On my bicycle, I feel like a king’

It’s a long weekend, sun is shining, the weather is sweet.

Here’s a charming little song we borrowed from our cycling neighbours up north. Two bicycle loving lads called Batiste and David to be precise. This is so incredibly feel good, it’s ridiculous. Watch it two times and you’ll be on the streets, on your bike, whistling.

And there are a lot of cycle chic people in the video.

We should actually make a video like this. Anyone wanna join in? Give me a yell.

But for now: just have fun, be happy. Go ride with your friends.
